Violence against Christians by Muslims in Jos in central Nigeria site has more than one hundred deaths. Sectarian violence in the region in January, took hundreds of lives. The Christian villagers were massacred with machetes and then put in fire.
A witness who visited the village after the massacre reported that there were hundreds of bodies in stacked layers.
The Muslim attackers came from the surrounding hills and attacked the sleeping villagers, took them from their homes and slaughtered them with machetes. Jos is located on the border of the Muslim north and predominantly Christian southern Nigeria and is regularly the scene of religious riots. LINK
Approximately 140 million people inhabit Nigeria, the most populated country in Africa. The country is divided by ethnic and religious differences. 60% of the population is Muslim living mostly in the North of the country. Christians mainly inhabit the South. The introduction of the Sharia law 10 years ago in 12 states provoked a series of riots throughout the country. In August 2004 the Islamic government in the Zamfara state threatened to demolish all churches considered as illegal structures, close all businesses belonging to Christians during Muslim prayers, and enforce a new law against clothing that is not compliant with Islamic law.

The slaughter of Christians in central Nigeria does not bode well for next year’s election

The massacre of 500 Christian villagers in Nigeria yesterday is the latest outrage in a decade-long cycle of communal violence around the central city of Jos, which is situated between the Muslim north and Christian south of the country.
With a power struggle between an ailing president and his vice-president developing, and an election scheduled for 2011, the prospects for peace in this nation of 150 million Christians and Muslims seem bleak.
Accounts of Sunday morning’s massacre vary, but it seems that at around 3.0 am, bands of machete-wielding Muslim nomads attacked three villages around Jos, the state capital of Plateau.
The attackers shot rifles into the air and set fire to the thatched roofs of mud huts, forcing the inhabitants outside where they were caught in fishing nets and animal traps and hacked to death with machetes. The dead were mostly women and children.
Survivors told AFP that the Fulani attackers identified their targets, Christian Beroms, by shouting ‘nage’, the Fulani word for cattle. Anybody unable to respond in the Fulani language was killed.
Local media claimed text messages had been sent to the few Muslim villagers two days before the attack, telling them to escape. Despite the region’s history of inter-communal violence, the military response was too slow.
“We have been able to make 95 arrests but at the same time over 500 people have been killed in this heinous act,” Dan Manjang, an advisor to the state government, told AFP.

Nigerian government sources are blaming Muslim clans for the slaughter of up to 550 Christians in a weekend attack on a Christian village.
The once-virgin bush on the fringes of the village of Dogo Nahawa turned into a cemetery overnight, after more than 500 Christians were hacked to death with machetes in a three-hour orgy of violence on Sunday close to Jos, Africasia reports.
David Kyeng, a local vigilante who fled to the hills when the attackers raided the three Christian villages, estimates hundreds of herdsmen from the Muslim Fulani staged the slaughter.
“I saw these attackers shooting into the air, scaring people out of their homes and hacking them as they tried to flee,” he tells AFP.
Pregnant women and children were among the scores of people cut down by axes, daggers and cutlasses, officials said.
Much of the violence was centred on Dogo Nahawa, where gangs set fire to straw-thatched mud huts as they pursued the rampage. Around two-thirds of the houses are burnt to the ground.
Amid the devastation and heartache, tensions are running high: around 30 men attack and wound a Muslim journalist covering the funeral, accusing him of spying.
He is pushed to the ground, kicked and pelted with rocks. A government official who tries to intervene is punched and left with a bloody nose.
The weekend’s explosion of violence is the latest between rival ethnic and religious groups in the same area. In January 326 people died in clashes in and around Jos, according to police, although rights activists put the overall toll at more than 550.
The government has since called for the arrest of Alhaji Saleh Bayeri, former executive secretary, Muslim Welfare Board and State Secretary of Miyetti Allah Cattle Rearers Association, accusing him of “issuing threats and inciting Fulani people against the Berom People which is unfortunat,” the Daily Champion adds.

Lagos, Nigeria (CNN) — Attackers killed at least 11 people Wednesday in a region of Nigeria that has been convulsed by violence between Muslims and Christians, an official said.
Muslim herdsmen, some dressed in military uniforms, attacked a predominantly Christian village at about 1 a.m. Wednesday near the city of Jos, close to where a machete-wielding Muslim group killed hundreds in a mostly Christian town this month, said Choji Gyang, special adviser on religious affairs to the governor of the Nigerian state of Plateau.

The dead included women and children, he said. The attackers, from the Fulani ethnic group, also injured at least four people and stole 120 cattle from the village of Kyi, he said. Two people are missing.
The violence has put much of oil-rich Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, on edge, with rumors swirling of more attacks. Authorities in Lagos took the unusual step of sending a text message to residents to try to put them at ease.
“Please be informed that the story of Fulanis trooping into Lagos for the past three days to cause chaos is baseless,” the message said. “All security agencies have investigated this rumor individually and collectively and found that there’s no iota of truth in it. Be advised to go about your lawful business without fear.
“All agencies remain committed to keep our state and country safe. We are fully alert. Thank-you and pass this message onto others.”
The attacks Wednesday followed the massacre earlier this month of roughly 200 people near Jos, a city in central Nigeria that lies on a faith-based fault-line between Muslim-dominated northern Nigeria and the mainly Christian south.
A few weeks ago, Muslim attackers with guns, machetes, and knives killed people in several Christian villages near Jos in apparent retaliation for previous attacks against Islamic communities and the theft of cattle from herdsmen, Human Rights Watch said.
What’s behind slaughter in Nigeria?
Thousands of people in Plateau state have been killed in similar outbreaks of violence in the last decade, said Corinne Dufka, a senior West Africa researcher at Human Rights Watch.
Though the violence often pits Christians and Muslims against each other, it has more to do with disputes over access to natural resources than religion, according to John Onaiyekan, the archbishop of Abuja, Nigeria.
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo also has said that the violence is fueled more by ethnic, social, and economic problems than religion.
“If you have one group or a community that has land that’s been encroached upon by another community or even by itinerant cattle farmers, then the people who lay claim to the land will fight back,” he recently told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour.
“If there are job opportunities in an area, and persons believe they are indigenous to that area, and (are) not getting enough out of the jobs that are available, they will fight those who are getting the jobs.”
