As Obama Quietly Pushes for a Nuclear Weapons Renaissance, Wildfire Threatens Los Alamos Nuclear Lab
HOPING TO KICK OFF ANOTHER COLD WAR WITH RUSSIA AND PROBABLY CHINA…..
AMY GOODMAN: A senior investigator with the Project on Government Oversight said a fire at the laboratory’s plutonium facility would be a, quote, “disaster” that could result in large and lethal releases of radiation. Officials insist explosive materials on the laboratory’s grounds are safely stored in underground bunkers made of concrete and steel, but the group Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety told the Associated Press the fire appeared to be about three-and-a-half miles from a dump site where as many as 30,000 55-gallon drums of plutonium-contaminated waste were stored in fabric tents above ground. The group said the drums were awaiting transport to a low-level radiation dump site in southern New Mexico.

Beating the Drums of a Broader US-NATO Middle East War

by Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya

Global Research Editor’s Note

The World is at a dangerous crossroads. In the wake of the war on Libya, the tendency is towards military escalation over a region extending from the Mediterranean to Central Asia.

Syria and Iran are next on NATO’s military road map.

The following article, originally published by Global Research in May 2008, sheds light on current US-NATO threats directed against Syria and Iran.

As suggested by Nazemroaya, plans to implement a broader Middle East war have been on the drawing board of the Pentagon for several years.

The Levant could be the starting point of a major international conflict with global ramifications and which could quickly spin out of control. Such a conflict could even involve the use of Israeli or American nuclear weapons against Iran and Syria. Syria has additionally declared that it is preparing for an inevitable war with Israel despite the fact that it believes that the chances of a war in 2008 are slim.

In the scenario of a war against Iran, the reaction of Syria will be pivotal. Damascus plays a central role and how it acts and reacts will have a definitive impact on Israeli military strategy in regards to Iran. It is in this context that Israel, the U.S. and the E.U., with the help of Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Egypt, have been attempting to undermine and ultimately destroy the alliance between Syria and Iran. This is part of a geo-strategic stride to foreclose the possibility of a Mediterranean battle-front that might emerge in the Levant as a result of an attack on Iran.

The casus belli for an Israeli attack or a joint Israeli-U.S. attack, possibly involving NATO, against Syria or against both Syria and Iran could use the pretext of any form of retaliation by Hezbollah against Israel for the assassination in Damascus of one of its leaders, Imad Fayez Mughniyeh.

Hezbollah has joined Iranian officials in saying that the U.S. military is incapable of starting another war in the Middle East by launching attacks on Iran and Syria. [1] Israeli officials have also renewed calls for peace by openly mentioning that Tel Aviv is willing to return the Golan Heights back to the Syrians, while there have been strong political noises against the move in Israel. [2]

Tel Aviv is simultaneously part of a U.S. endeavour that claims Syria has a secret nuclear program aided by North Korea. [3] Strategic efforts, with strong links to war preparations, have also started with the aim of bringing temporary calm to the Palestinian Territories as part of the same track of events in the Levant.

Redrawing the Arab-Israeli Conflict as an Iranian-Israeli Conflict to justify War

Momentum is being built up against Iran in a list of growing, and more frequent, accusations against Tehran.

Iran is portrayed as the main threat against Israel. It is also accused of intervening in occupied Iraq and Afghanistan. In this sense, the Israeli-U.S. war plans in the Levant have been tied to Iran, as well as Syria. The investigative journalist Seymour M. Hersh, a Pulitzer Prize winner, reported in 2006 that the Israeli war against Lebanon was part of this Israeli-U.S. military roadmap to ultimately target Iran.

The accusations against Tehran and Damascus are part of a calculated effort to justify attacks against Iran and Syria as the only means to achieve peace in the Levant between Israel and the Arabs. They are also upheld as justification to ensure the security and success of occupation forces, for Anglo-American and NATO forces respectively in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In this regard, the Gaza Strip, alongside Lebanon, is now being described by Tel Aviv as an “Iranian base” against Israel. Israel is pointing the finger more and more towards Tehran as the source of its problems.

Sharon Says US Should Also Disarm Iran, Libya and Syria
    By Jim Scanlon

(The above headline appeared in the English version of the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz on Feb. 18, 2003. The statements attributed to Mr. Sharon below do not appear to have been reported in the US media.)

The Prime Minister of Israel Ariel Sharon told US Congressmen visiting Israel that Iran, Libya and Syria are irresponsible states and should be stripped of weapons of mass destruction after Iraq. Sharon was also reported to have met with US Undersecretary of State John Bolton to whom he expressed his concerns about the security threat posed by Iran and how important it is for America to deal with Iran even while attention is focused on Iraq.

No Doubt America Will Attack Iraq

Bolton, who is Undersecretary for Arms Control and International Security told Israeli officials he had no doubt America would attack Iraq and that it would be necessary to deal with the threats from Syria, Iran and North Korea.

Bolton was reportedly in Israel for meetings on preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction which seems strange in that Israel whose leaders have consistently refused to sign the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, deliberately deceived US nuclear power plant inspectors during the 1960s, hijacked a French cargo ship laden with uranium ore and secretly developed, not only a large nuclear arsenal, but also the means to accurately deliver nuclear warheads anywhere in Asia, Africa and Europe.

Bolton also met with Foreign Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Housing Construction Minister Nathan Sharansky, both of whom are advocates of expanded settlements, or colonization of the occupied West Bank territories (Judea and Samaria). Sharansky is reported to have “warned” Bolton that the so called “Quartet” powers (US, UN. the European Union and Russia) plan for Israelis and Palestinians “deviated from President Bush’s vision.”

State Department officials usually inform foreign governments of US policy with which they can agree or disagree, so it is difficult to understand the meaning of Sharansky’s “warning” to a high US State Department official, other than that US and Israeli interests are extraordinarily intertwined and dysfunctional.

    Who Is John Bolton?

John Bolton is a former vice president of the American Enterprise Institute a conservative or right wing organization. He had close ties with Senator Jesse Helms and held positions in the Reagan and Bush the Father administrations. He is on record as anti-UN, in opposition to the Anti Ballistics Missile Treaty, the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, against “normal” relations with North Korea and against the International Criminal Court, all high qualifications for a Bush Cheney appointee and an emissary to the Likud government of Israel.

    This Small and Insignificant Nation.

Recently Israeli officials reacted with unusual outrage to a ruling by Belgium’s highest court that Ariel Sharon could be tried for genocide and war crimes which occurred during the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982 when Sharon was Defense Minister. The Belgian law allowing for universal indictment for war crimes is separate from the war crimes trials that are taking place in the Hague in the Netherlands. It was enacted in 1993 after 10 Belgian paratroopers were killed in Rwanda.

Foreign Minister Netanyahu was quoted in the NY Times stating, “We in Israel and the Jewish people as a whole have had enough of blood libels on the soil of Europe and we are going to fight this one…” While Mr. Sharon made no statement on his possible indictment when he leaves office, Israel’s president was reported to have written a “severe letter” to King Albert II and Israel’s Justice Minister referred to Belgium as, “This small and insignificant nation.”

The Times also reported that “several Israeli officials” said “Israel might work to block new Belgian efforts to increase American investment,” certainly a threatening statement, which, whether real or imagined, illustrates an attitude of unlimited influence on American policy makers and a complete disregard for diplomatic appearances.
