Labour’s policy on immigration is leading to English becoming a second language in UK schools

By Mark Reynolds LABOUR’S open-door policy on immigration is leading to English becoming a second language in schools across Britain, figures revealed yesterday.

Since 1997, the number of schools in which more than 50 per cent of pupils have English as their second language has almost doubled.

Critics said the figures reflected the “splintering of society” as a result of the UK’s inefficient border controls under Labour.

Pupils with English as their first language now find themselves in the minority in more than 1,500 schools across the country.

And the huge rise in foreign- speaking pupils is placing growing strain on already stretched council education services.

The shocking figures, released under a Freedom of Information request, show that in 1997 there were 866 schools in England where more than 50 per cent of pupils spoke a foreign language as their mother tongue.

However, by 2009 this figure had rocketed to 1,545 schools, a rise of 78 per cent during the time that Labour has been in power.

Sir Andrew Green, of MigrationWatch UK, said: “These figures are unmistakable evidence that, in some parts of England, mass immigration is splintering our society. The only solution is to get immigration down to manageable proportions.”

Shadow immigration minister Damian Green said: “Since 1997, Labour’s open-door immigration policy has seen the largest rise in immigration in our history. In 1997 net migration – the number of people who come to settle here, minus the number who leave – was 48,000. In 2008 it was 163,000.

“A Conservative government will reduce immigration to tens of thousands a year, instead of the hundreds of thousands a year under Labour.” He added: “This also underlines the need for the Conservative policy to expect anyone coming to the UK to get married to be able to speak English.” WHAT WOULD YOUR EUSSR MASTERS SAY TO THAT–EUMED HAS TO HIT SOON- TORIES SIGNED UPTO THIS IS 1995!!

The statistics, released by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, reveal there are now 1,284 primary schools, 210 secondary schools and 51 special schools where more than half the pupils come from a non- English speaking background. TREBLE THEIR STATS

Around one in seven youngsters in primary schools, almost 500,000, do not have English as their first language. In secondary schools the figure stands at 364,000, just over one in 10. John Paul, from the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, said teachers needed more financial support.

He said: “Ideally, if you have one child in a class, you would like to know they are getting an hour a week with a second language expert to give them the opportunity to ask questions about the things they don’t understand.”

Figures show that London, frequently the arrival point for immigrants, has seen the largest increases, with 369,170 pupils now foreign speakers. In Newham, east London, the number of primary schools with more than 50 per cent non-English native speakers has risen from 18 to 60, and the number of secondary schools from seven to 13.

At Nelson Primary, in Newham, three-quarters of pupils are now not native English speakers and some 56 different languages are spoken.

And the problems are replicated elsewhere. Birmingham now has 116 schools where more than 50 per cent of pupils speak English as a second language. In Bradford the figure is 60, in Leicester 34, Manchester 33, Lancashire 30 and Kirklees 30.

In the south, Luton has 21 schools, Slough 18, and Peterborough 10. Many towns and cities are struggling to cope with the influx of foreigners. In Peterborough, some 10,000 eastern European immigrants have arrived in the last six years, putting huge strain on education and social housing.

Last night no one at the Department for Children, Schools and Families was available for comment.

Immigration: Now it’s the Foreign Secretary Who Get’s His Facts Seriously Wrong

No sooner has the PM had his knuckles wrapped by the Statistics Authority for using misleading statistics on immigration, than his Foreign Secretary does the same on Radio 5 Live.

In an interview at 8.40 a.m. this morning on the Five Live Breakfast Show, David Miliband said:

“One point that is very often not understood is that half the people who came into the country last year, of 160,000, were British people returning to Britain ……..”.
In fact he was referring to net immigration for 2008 which was 163,000 but none of them were British people returning home. In fact, twice as many Brits left as arrived that year so they made no contribution to net immigration. Of the total of 590,000 who arrived in 2008 only about 1 in 7 was British.

Commenting, Sir Andrew Green Chairman of Migrationwatch said, ‘Yet again a very senior member of the Government has got his facts on immigration completely wrong. If Cabinet Ministers cannot get the basic facts right, how can they possibly have an effective immigration policy.’

Prime Minister gets it wrong on immigration – again

In his speech on immigration on 31 March, the Prime Minister attacked “those who propose a quota” on immigration. He claimed that it was unworkable and quoted from an IPPR paper to support his case.

In fact nobody is calling for a quota on immigration. He was, presumably, confusing an overall policy objective for net immigration which the Cross Party Group on Balanced Migration wish to see with a Conservative proposal for a cap on work permits which are only a small part of the picture.

A report out today from Migrationwatch examines the IPPR claims quoted by the Prime Minister and finds them to be unfounded. They are based on an overestimate of net immigration from the EU and they fail to take account of the plans by both major parties for a second Points Based test before economic migrants are granted settlement. The Migrationwatch paper demonstrates that a broad strategic aim of 40,000 a year is entirely feasible over a period of years.

Said Sir Andrew Green, Chairman of Migrationwatch: ‘The Prime Minister is again getting into a muddle over immigration. It is hard to know whether he is trying to distract attention from the inexcusable government record of admitting three million immigrants since 1997 or whether he is seeking to avoid any firm commitment to limiting immigrant numbers in future.’

Prime Minister Rapped by Statistics Authority
March 31, 2010
Responding to a complaint by Migrationwatch about the Prime Minister’s misleading use of immigration statistics, the Chairman of the Statistics Authority has written to Mr Brown. He pointed out that the statistics were wrong (for the reasons given in our press release of 27 March – below) and expressed the hope that all parties would be careful in their use of statistics in the coming weeks. Prime Minister gets his facts wrong on immigration

In his pod cast on Friday 26 March, the Prime Minister said “Some people talk as if net inward migration is rising. In fact, it is falling – down from 237,000 in 2007, to 163,000 in 2008, to provisional figures of 147,000 last year”.

The first two figures refer to Long Term Immigration and are correct. The last of these figures is wrong on three counts:

- It refers to the International Passenger Survey (IPS) which is only one element in the estimate of migration. These figures are adjusted for asylum seekers, migration from Ireland, those who come as visitors and apply to stay etc. As a result, the statisticians usually add about 38,000 to the annual IPS figure to produce the estimate for immigration.

- The first two numbers are for calendar years but the third is a mid year figure up to June 2009.

- It is also a cumulative annual total covering the previous 4 quarters so it is different in kind from a calendar year figure, especially if there is seasonal variation.

Commenting, Sir Andrew Green Chairman of Migrationwatch said, “The clear intention was to produce a series of figures which looked like a decline even if they were not of the same kind. In fact immigration in 2009 could well be higher than in 2008 although nobody, including the Prime Minster, can yet know. This amounts to fiddling the figures for presentational purposes and is completely unacceptable, especially on such a sensitive subject.”
