Few images better evoke the misery of unemployment than the food queues of the Great Depression – the strain is there for all to see on the faces of these once proud men, stripped of their dignity and self-esteem, as they stand in line for whatever pittance charity or the state was prepared to give.
Figures released this week by Britain’s Office for National Statistics are a potent reminder that the curse of mass joblessness is upon us once more. Unemployment is rising at the fastest rate since records began, with the most vulnerable – the low paid, the unskilled and the young – the hardest hit. The economy may have stopped contracting but nobody expects the damage to employment to be similarly contained.

Joblessness will continue to rise at a frightening clip for at least another year and won’t reach its peak until it has passed the three million mark, or more than one in 10 of the workforce. As the historian Thomas Carlyle observed: “A man willing to work but unable to find work is perhaps the saddest sight that fortune’s inequality exhibits under this sun.”
A social catastrophe is in the making that threatens to scar an entire generation. One of the most worrying aspects of the latest labour market statistics is the continued rise in youth unemployment. More than 30 per cent of 16-17-year-olds not in full‑time education or training are now unemployed, and 17.2 per cent of 19-24-year-olds. Habits and mindsets acquired at these ages stay with you for life. A lost generation of the unskilled and untrained is being poured cruelly on to our streets.
Immediate prospects for easing the problem are not good. The Government seems to be doing some of the right things, with a series of initiatives to ensure that the newly unemployed are swiftly back in work. Both employers and employees have also proved more adaptable and flexible than in previous recessions, with many agreeing to reduced working time and/or wage cuts as an alternative to mass redundancies.
But none of this will solve the problem. Mass unemployment during the Thirties was only finally ended by re-militarisation and a world war. After the misery of the Seventies, it was the consumer, housing, financial services and inward investment booms of the Thatcher years that provided the cure, then more of the same following the recession of the early Nineties. The dotcom bust was countered with an explosion of credit and public spending.
None of these routes back to full employment appear open to Britain today. Where are the jobs of the future going to come from, and how can policy-makers ensure they are created? The Government rests its hopes on the shift to a low-carbon economy, the digital revolution, and infrastructure renewal, particularly in energy and transport, where many projects will be privately financed and therefore not subject to constraints on public spending. Britain’s strengths in the creative industries, a revival in financial services, and a renaissance in high value-added manufacturing are also repeatedly cited. We shouldn’t mock: all these sectors ought to be important areas of job creation, but it may be years before they deliver as hoped.
In the meantime, many will be forced to fall back on self-reliance and “micro-employment”. This is the “odd jobs” economy epitomised by “white van man”, from plumbing to gardening, and at the other end of the spectrum from personal training to pedicures. Again, self-help is only part of the answer. More extreme solutions, such as the reintroduction of some form of national service for the young, may eventually become necessary.
Yet assuming it doesn’t come to that, it is fairly obvious what needs to be done – though apparently not to the Government. Britain must be made a conducive place to do business once more. Britain starts with lots of advantages in attracting the international investment, expertise and inventiveness it needs to recreate jobs and prosperity, but too many negatives have been allowed to develop during the long boom. Labour and capital have never been more mobile. Nobody has to be here any longer.
Quite a bit of the now vast panoply of employment legislation and protections – which according to the CBI has added some £70 billion to business costs in the past 10 years alone, enough to provide 215,000 jobs on average earnings – needs to be swept away. Much of this stuff is just a luxury of the boom and in a downturn only creates a form of apartheid between the haves and the have nots. Life inside the protected fortress of those who have jobs goes on largely as before, but the cost of maintaining these privileges excludes the rest.
The same is true of the corporate tax system, which has become a counterproductive mess whose only contribution to job creation is the ever-growing number of accountants employed in avoiding it. A new contract between the interests of state and business needs to be established to stem the growing exodus of international companies and attract new ones.
As for education, suffice it to say that surveys show growing employer dissatisfaction even with basic standards of literacy and numeracy among school and university leavers, let alone anything as necessary for the modern world as language skills, self-discipline and a can-do attitude to work.
Get these things right, and there may be some hope for the future.

I remember an Australian pig producer state, he could fly Aussie reared pigs via concord from Oz to Europe,and still undercut the EU ?
It seems all the countries in the world looked after their people, but in the UK,everything was slowly closed down, and now we are about to pay the bills.
I qualified in Geology/MSc in the UK in 1986/7, and the difficulty I found in getting my 1st job and the depressing setbacks until the mid 90′s has stayed with me. But I was lucky in having a good education, loyal wife and optimism.
I dont want to sound like a 45yo trodlodyte, but the general analytical ability of Geo’s from the UK & Aus (where I live) has declined. That’s before we mention reading & writing. Certainly computers have played their part (GIGO), but I also blame the lack of basic education in Maths/English/History at school, and as for the BS University courses on offer today, Media Studies ? Management ? (my Dad always said learn to do a job so you can manage other people doing the same job), let alone all these ‘social studies’.
I think fewer Uni students (let alone those who leave school early) are equipped with any skills. While in India & China (worked in both) the determination to work and study hard to better oneself is impressive. Where will the skilled jobs in the next upturn go ? Definitely not to the Vikki Pollards in the UK & Aus.
There will be no recovery, for many people.
Automation and high tech are destroying jobs at an accelerating rate. Companies adopt high tech to replace expensive people with inexpensive machines, not to employ more people. This accelerating process has now reached a tipping point.
For example, the rout of metal workers in the midlands and North was not solely due to uncompetitive British wages. New, inexpensive automated metal working machines (CNC mills and lathes) eliminated the need for skilled operators. Now metal working factories, which used to employ thousands of skilled, well paid workers, just need a handful of experts, to update the software, and a small group of low skilled “feeders” and “wipers”, to keep the automated machines clean and fed.
Soon this accelerating process will reach into previously safe professions. Computers can now diagnose illness better than many doctors, by instantly searching a large database of symptoms for diseases. The DARPA Grand Challenge (look it up) has proven that robots can drive cars, in challenging urban environments, as well as people can drive – maybe better. Next generation voice recognition systems, about to be rolled out in the next few years, are so good, many people will not realize they are talking to a robot.
Young people will fail to find a first job, because most entry level jobs just don’t exist anymore. Who needs a mail sorter, when a machine can do the job?
Companies have no interest in employing young people who, after expensive, unprofitable training, to bring them up to a useful skill level, could simply be poached by competitors. In the old days the cost and risk of training could be offset by profit from whatever menial entry level job the trainees were doing, but most menial, entry level office jobs don’t exist anymore. A few young people will win long, unpaid internships, through parental connections, or utter determination. Too many will fail to breach this new barrier to entry.
The current recession is disguising this process of accelerating technological unemployment. Companies ready to leap into next generation automation are disguising the inevitable job losses as necessary cutbacks for the recession, to minimize the worker and political backlash. They are clearing their books of 100s of thousands who they couldn’t be seen to fire when times were good.
But in the jobless recovery to come, there will be no hiding the scale of this issue.
Thankfully for my prospects, I am a computer programmer.
Prostitution may have been the first profession, but computer programming will be the last.
When they don’t need me anymore, the computers will be programming themselves, and they wont need anyone. The age of work, and mass prosperity, will truly be over.
Walt O’Brien (10 .38 pm) has outlined in his analysis the exact course of action being propounded by the New World Order clique. The idea is to globalize as much as possible, move the money from the first world to the third world and then control everything. They have, at sometime or other, articulated all of these ideas. Let’s face it, if you were them wouldn’t you?
The UK is now facing a future with two generations who are mostly illiterate and enumerate thanks to a devastated education system. This began under Wilson and continued under all governments ever since, even that of Mrs Thatcher. From what I have heard and seen, we now have at least one generation of teachers who are incapable of teaching anything worthwhile. Two of my grandchildren have now left school with good ‘A’ levels who would be unable to pass the ‘O’ level GCE exams I took in the early 50′s let alone attempt the ‘A’ levels of that era. Don’t get me wrong they are very, very bright children with very high IQ’s, but extremely badly taught.
However, it would appear that they both went to the best schools in their area, and ones that are highly praised at that. What the hell the products of the worst are like I dread to think. I regret to say that if either of them applied to me for a job they would probably not get to the interview stage, unless someone wrote their application letter for them. Then if they made it that far, unless they had a complete makeover, their appearance would sink them immediately. The same goes for their all their friends. Yes I know; blame the parents, and I do. Unfortunately, their parents are all graduates who were educated in the eighties.
I rest my case.
Corporations forget that if people in the west can no longer afford to buy products (everything from washers to cars to clothes, to toys for the kids and so on) these corporations will start to loose money. These corporations would do better to create jobs so that the employees can afford to buy these things. Also, these corporations need to manufacture goods that are cheap enough for the workers to buy. That is something Henry Ford understood.

Call-centres in INDIA now hiring for our banks/insurance companies plus BT…make that 4 million unemployed by early next year.

THE FABIAN PARTIES DESTROY BRITAIN POLICIES – WARNED OF DECADES AGO- AGAIN IN RECENT TIMES–BUT BRITS REFUSE TO SEE WHAT’S RIGHT UNDER THEIR NOSES—
In the lead up to the final push by Brown’s government to ram through the Lisbon Treaty and have our Parliament endorse it, I thought that it was relevant to republish this article (first published 4th October 07).
It was written just as the Tory Party Conference came to a close.
Have you noticed, like the delegates at conference this past week that nothing works. The Health Service, The Police, The Judiciary, Rubbish collection, local authorities, education, the welfare system, you name it, it isn’t working properly.
After 10 years of NuLab meddling, you have to want to understand why, you need an explanation.
Imagine, if the traitors in our midst had all got together, (Nulab, Common Purpose and the EU, and yes, they are traitors, even changing the Treason laws to protect themselves) to formulate a plan to create a single empire, the EUsoviet, they would have to destroy our Nation – and it would probably read something like this:
Fellow Globalists, Fabians and Common Purpose graduates.
If you believe, as we do, that, Britain, but especially, England, is too arrogant, and too xenophobic, to willingly accept global governance, then we will have to destroy its identity, and weaken it sufficiently, so that it is no longer able to resist. Surprisingly it won’t be too hard to do.
Look at history. History shows that Nations are far more fragile than their citizens believe. Arnold Tynbee observed the lessons of history, in essence, when he said, “…all great Nations commit suicide”. We simply have to speed things along.
Here’s the plan:
- Firstly, we must promote “Multiculturalism”. To support this, we will make it an article of belief that all cultures are equal, and that cultural differences are not important.
For instance, if any point out that drop-out rates are high for young Blacks, we respond by saying that this is entirely due to the prejudice and discrimination of the indigenous population. We refuse to countenance any other explanations.
- The religious beliefs of immigrants must be accepted, not only as equal to, but superior to, those traditionally held in Britain. This must be done most carefully, so that liberal elements in the various churches can assist in their own downfall.
- Encourage immigrants to settle together so that they have no need to take on the culture of the majority. Again, the key to this will be the constant promotion of ‘Diversity’ rather than ‘Unity’. When all that is left to hold us together is tolerance and pluralism we will have destroyed what is meant by being British!
- We will encourage all immigrants to keep their own language and culture.
It will be important to ensure that we have various cultural sub-groups living in close proximity. Thereby reinforcing their differences.
- But this isn’t all. We must make our fastest growing demographic groups the least educated. This will add a second underclass; a class unassimilated, undereducated, and antagonistic to the indigenous majority. If we can make this underclass have a 50% drop out rate from school, so much the better.

<!–[endif]–> - We will of course have to get big business and liberal foundations to give our efforts to create diversity lots of money. We will invest in ethnic identities, and establish the cult of victimology. We will persuade the minorities that their lack of success is the fault of the majority.
This will enable the development of a ‘grievance industry’, which will blame all minority failures on the indigenous population. This will keep the majority intimidated. Because they won’t want to be labelled xenophobic or racist, they will rapidly become afraid to, even question, what is happening.

So preach ‘Diversity’ at every opportunity!
Remember, it is against historical precedent to have a diverse, peaceful, and stable society. Remember also that in general terms, people undervalue the unity that’s needed to keep a nation together. We will take advantage of this natural Myopia.
If we are successful, and we will be, (just so long as can keep the plan hidden from the majority for long enough) we will be able to Balkanise Britain as easily as Yugoslavia.

A similar approach will be adopted towards any genuinely ‘Nationalist’ organisation that showed signs of growth, for such an occurrence would be a direct danger to ‘The Plan’. So, if such a group appears, on top of labelling them racist and xenophobic, we will also launch a massive negative-publicity campaign against them. We will use the police and intelligence agencies to harass their activists, attempt to bankrupt them and, amend voting procedures to deny such a group access to political power. (Scottish voting debacle ring any bells)
Did you recognise the 10 points of the plan to destroy Britain?
You should do, as this ‘Plan’ was put into operation decades ago, and the final section of the ‘Plan’ is now being actively used – against Parties such as the BNP, UKIP and occasionally many of the other hundreds of registered political parties, unions, blogs,and many individuals.
The One Party State is all part of the plan.
Does this mean that all is lost?
Far from it! The ‘Plan’ has only succeeded so far because it’s secret purpose has been kept so well hidden by the political establishment!
It beholds all of us to fight through the abuse, intimidation, and harassment (that activists have had to contend with on a daily basis), to bring the truth to the man in the street.
In other words, we all have to become activists. For the enemies of Britain have almost completed the project, ‘Destroy Britain’.
Time is short, but we, the present generations of this country, also have a duty to generations yet to come. A duty that demands that we expose what has been done to Britain – by those charged with its protection! If you call yourself a patriot, a Nationalist or a Libertarian, you cannot stand idly by.
Exposure is the only thing our enemies really fear. So let’s expose them and their squalid plan.
Everyone can do something. Talk to friends and neighbours, wherever you go, write to blogs, newspapers, councils, read to educate yourselves. Become an active voluntary worker for the opposition Party of your choice. The list of opportunities are endless. Friends, Britain needs you. Please, please, don’t let Her down!
It is clear that Gordon Brown is solidly behind Project Destroy Britain, exposing the cold calculated nature of the politician ruling from No.10, continuing the legacy left him by Tony Blair.
Like the thief in the night, they do this in secret, behind closed doors utilising the Chatham House rules so that we, the public, the taxpayers, will remain the ones who must never know the full extent of their crimes of state.
It is time to expose this theft of our nation, to our birth rights and liberties, and expose the individuals responsible, who must be brought to book.

Save Our Steel march on Corus in Cleveland

More than 5,000 people marched in Teeside today to demand the government do more to save the steel industry.
The ‘Save Our Steel’ demonstrators are calling for action to prevent the possible closure of the Corus plant in Redcar, Cleveland.
The 150-year-old plant is the area’s main employer and more than 3,000 jobs could be lost if it closes.
Union organisers and local MPs claim the government could prevent Corus pulling out of the region by bringing forward major projects and increasing demand.
The firm has been by hit the falling price of steel and a consortium of customers withdrawing from a 10-year contract to use them as a supplier.
Roy Rickhuss from the Community Union claims British manufacturing as a whole would not survive if the government failed to act on the Corus closure.
Mr Rickhuss said: “We need help, we need support from the government if the manufacturing base in this country is going to survive.
“And steel is key to that, without steel there is no manufacturing base in this country.”
Steel workers union official Richard Green said that the loss of the Redcar plant would have a devastating effect on the families of those laid-off, leading to an increase in child poverty across Teeside.
He said: “With the plight of children becoming a serious problem in our community, it’s time to recognise that the best answer to the threat of children living in poverty is to ensure that their parents have access to sustainable long-term employment.”
London based Corus, which was formed by the merger of the once nationalised British Steel Corporation, is a subsidiary of India’s Tata Steel Group.
As well as Cleveland they have plants across the UK, including Port Talbot, Scunthorpe, Rotherham and Shotton.
In January, the company announced they were shedding 3,500 jobs worldwide and 2,500 in the UK.
The price of steel has fallen by two-thirds in the last year, from $1,000 to $300 per tonne.
